Somewhere over the rainbow, bah!

I had a really, really great time at Sabah! Thanks guys--Tina, Julie, Daron, Nathan and Fiona for making my 5 days there so memorable for me, a freshie to Sabah. I miss spending time with you guys..miss it, mak-mak!

A gist of what I did in Sabah:
  • Visited the beautiful islands of Sapi and Mamutik on Sunday. Aaah, crystal clear waters and blue skies..what more could I ask for? I think Daron was the most excited among us because he had been looking forward to the beach for a long time. There were some interesting wildlife on Sapi island too.

  • Gave Fiona a surprise visit on Saturday evening. She didn't know I was in town :-p

  • Braved the ice cold showers in the mornings. Hey I'm getting used to it already!

  • Being jolted by Julie and Tina in church on Friday night. So GOOD to see you guys again!!!!

  • Walking in the markets along Gaya street, hunting for good breakfast.

  • The morning drive to Kinabalu Park, which was an hour away from Tamparuli. It rained the whole way and the thick mist made it hard to see Mt Kinabalu.

  • Had superb Kon Lou mee with beef soup in KK.. It was absolutely to die for. The soup was nothing like the salt + water one usually served in KL.

  • Hanging out and watching The Nanny on Daron's tv.

  • Eating out in the cafes around KK.

  • Getting my hair cut last Monday!

There's a strip of rainbow between the hills if you look carefully.

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue.
And the dreams that you dare to dream
    Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Away above the chimney tops.
    That's where you'll find me.

    I'll see you again, Sabah.

Eyes wide open

It's 3 am and sleep still eludes me.

Today was sprinkled with a few random events, right from the preacher's sermon to what I had for dinner. Usually my Sabbath entails pretty routine activities: church in Central, mingling/brief hellos (this part I seldom enjoy), a quick bite at McDonald's and then home. Well some parts of today turned out a little differently, of which I'm glad..

I anticipated a usual sermon for Sabbath but what I received was a simple and uplifting one about the value of a human being in God's eyes.

I anticipated talking to the same folks at the church foyer but instead spoke to someone new and realized people would go beyond a "Fine, thanks" answer if I'd stick around longer to listen. Deanna, you wrote somewhere on your profile before that "people are important". Ever since I read that, it has really struck me how quickly we dismiss the people around us simply because they don't impress us enough.

I anticipated a relaxing (read: sleepy & boring) evening in the house but I was dragged out to swim in a saltwater pool and a game of ping-pong. And brought out for delicious chocolate cake with friends (so much for burning calories) at a place where couples don't really mind making out in the open.

Anticipation..I had it all wrong for today.
