The topic of exams and holidays popped up in the conversation I had with my cousin last night. Somehow these two things are what uni students ever talk about.
He said, "We plan for so much before the holidays come, and then when it does you're at a loss at finding something to do." And then you get the blues. So true. I've got 4 weeks to go and I'm determined to NOT be at a loss! Sometime last week, I promised myself that I'd scrub the corners of the bathroom floor right after that last paper. It's my way of dealing with that high after accomplishing something. Have I done it yet? Nope, because I've wasted that high on those Oreo cookies yesterday. Perhaps tomorrow. It's only day-2 of my break.
Thinking about post-exam activities reminded me of what I overheard at the last day of high school.
It was right after the last SPM exam, the moment everyone swore carried the best feeling in the world. People talked about the 1st thing they were going to do with their time, now that high school was officially over. I overheard some declaring that they were going to throw away their books. Some wanted to burn them. Why? To them it was a mark that high school was over, and that real life began. A sign of protest too, just short of flashing that finger at the face of the English teacher who was always getting on their case or that Sejarah (History) teacher who bored them to death.
Well, I don't think any books were set on fire at the end of that day. But who knows? It's just plain rude, not to the authors or the people who bought them, but to ourselves for destroying written content. Books. The Grinch, while dragging a pile of rubbish uphill to his home said this to Max his dog: One man's toxic waste is another man's potpourri. There would always be someone who's willing to own them, like pets. Not that I'm a fan of clutter but when it comes to books, I think they deserve a little more respect than a worn-out sandal.
Just a thought.
